Schools

In the 1850’s the residents of Big Prairie township organized the first school district. The “school” was held at a privet residence with Relief Bonney as the instructor. In 1852 the first one-room school house was built in Big Prairie township with Adeline Olney as the first teacher. Newaygo County is proud of its long history of one-room school houses, some of which still stand today.
