Railroad

The white river railroad had begun operating in White Cloud April 1, 1880. The goal was to connect White Cloud north and Merrill township in Newaygo County. In 1889 the track had been extended 4 miles to Bitely, MI and by 1889 at the railway line extended 29 more miles to Baldwin, MI. The White River line made transporting lumber easier and faster during the popular timber boom.
